So you are either planning a new kitchen or updating what you already have. Having your kitchen refurbished or build, is not something you do often and planning is very important and that includes takeaways or restaurants while the kitchen installation is carried out.

The most important aspect of any kitchen design is to create a layout that suits everyone's needs. There must be sufficient space to handle food storage, preparation, cooking and cleaning.

In tiny kitchens every space available matters, room for food preparation, cooking, washing up, storage. When space is at a premium in the kitchen, it is essential to plan the room thoroughly. There are basic design rules for kitchens, however large or small. Most common basic shapes for a kitchen plan are I, U and L shapes.

An I shaped kitchen is best for kitchens located in passages or narrow rooms. In this type of kitchen, all appliances and storage is down one side of the room, making a neat and efficient line.

An L shaped kitchen fits best a rectangular room, or part of a multi purpose room where the kitchen can be installed into one corner. The L shaped kitchen can be either fitted neatly around the corner or if the space permits, one arm can be build into the room to act as a serving table or eating bar. But this installation is more suitable for spacious kitchen rooms.

A U shaped kitchen can be fitted in square kitchens and is often best in a confined space because the appliances can be installed around the cook, who stands in the centre and has everything within reach.
